Iridiscent displays are LCD displays that use an optical trick borrowed from the wings of butterflies. Each pixel of the display is made from microscopic stuctures that work like imperfect mirrors, reflecting back incoming light but altering its colors. This permits to create full color imagesĀ even in direct sunlight. Because they use reflected light rather than emitting their own, these displays consume far less energy than conventional ones and can referesh quickly enough to show videos.
As they need much less battery power than previous displays, iridescent displays permit to build much slimmer devices. This technology has already been adopted by Qualcomm for its Mirasol line of products and many competitors are deemed to follow soon the same route.
A new tecnology with a bright future.
