Magnetic refrigeration is a cooling technology based on the magnetocaloric effect. This technique can be used to attain extremely low temperatures, as well as the ranges used in common refrigerators, depending on the design of the system. While for many years this technology has been used only for experimental or industrial use as the equipments employed are still rather expensive, intensive research is trying to find new materials that could render this technology much less expensive, and suitable for home appliances. Appliances using this method could have a smaller environmental impact assessment if the method is perfected and replaces hydrofluorocarbon (HFCs) refrigerators, which have considerable effect on the ozone layer. A new technology that can be a revolution in this field.
Recently, Louisiana State University has discovered new materials that can enhance the process of magnetic refrigeration: see http://dragplus.com/post/id/29865739
