What is now called Big Data actually comprises three types of data included in a mobile phone: the Primary data, i.e. those user generated such as address books, calendaes, SMS, Secondary data, i.e those generated by the mobile phone such as call history, records of current and past locations, as well as Tertiary data.
Tertiary data is data generated about us, rather than by us. Mostly, this data consists of cache files — data that is entirely necessary for someone using an electronic device, or significantly improves his user experience, but he doesn’t necessarily know is there. An obvious example is tucked in digital photographs. Every picture you take is geotagged and date stamped, and if you publish your pictures to a photo-sharing site without stripping that information, you’re leaking tertiary data.
