Plain package laws have already been passed in Australia, preventing logos and graphics to appear on cigarettes packages, that will be entirely white except for a tiny appearance of the brand name in standard capital letters. This is intened to make the product much less attractive, expecially to younger consumers. Similiar laws on tobacco products are now being discussed by the EU, whereas other countries are targeting other products such as alcoholic beverages.
Brand owners are strongly challenging those laws, that could destroy the value of their brands and facilitate counterfeiting, while not being very effective for the proposed target. A heated discussion is currently going on and will be around for many years to come.
